Jeremiah 1:5; 1 John 4:8
Discussion Question: When You Read the Old Testament
Discussion question… When you read the Old Testament do you read it as written for the people of old or is it applicable to us today? When the prophets are given messages from God do they apply to only the people he was referring to or to all of us? Is the Old Testament a huge history lesson where we can read of the things that transpired between God and his people and get a glimpse of who God is and what his feelings and actions were towards those who rebelled vs those who were obedient?
For example: Jeremiah 1:5Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you (and approved of you as MY chosen instrument) and before you were born, I consecrated you (to myself as My own).
We quote that scripture as though he was talking to each of us today. In reality he was speaking to Jeremiah. There is no place in that to add my name. I want to. I want to think that God chose me, put his stamp of approval on me, I am not questioning whether God loves me and has a plan and purpose for my life. I know he does.
I am just being curious. The Old Testament is filled with rebellion, wars, and anger. God let his approval and disapproval be known on a personal level. Kingdoms rose and fell at his hands. The truth is only a VERY few stayed steadfast, faithful, dedicated to God. That is true today. We claim the name, sit on a pew, read our bible, pat ourselves on the back as a “good” Christian, put on the mask but for all the wrong reasons. We are just going through the motions; our daily lives do not reflect what we claim to be.
If there were consequences in the old days would God be God if he did not do the same today? God wants to be our number 1 in good times and bad not just the last resort in times of trouble.
1 John 4:8He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
Love is an action word go put a lot of action into your day.
